Giyalang - The Circle of Belonging
Material: Acrylic on Canvas
Frame: Floating Tasmanian Oak
Dimensions: 1550mm x 1050mm
Year: 2025
In the heart of Wiradjuri Country, where the rivers flow like memory, the Giyalang - a single, unbroken circle - holds deep significance.
It represents a sacred resting place. A gathering ground. A space where we sit together, share stories, and feel safe. Around that circle, the U-shapes appear - each one a person, a community member, a presence. Together, they speak to kinship, strength, and the quiet unity that holds us.
The circle itself offers protection. Inside it, we are known. We are welcome. The dots that line its edge are steps - marking the paths of those who walked before and those who walk beside us still. Fallen leaves ground the work in season and cycle, honouring Country and the ever-present sense of belonging it offers.
This series is a reflection of gratitude - for the people, places, and stories that have shaped me. For the ancestors whose footprints still guide my path. For the deep, steady roots of community that continue to hold me.
Giyalang isnāt just a symbol. Itās living storywork - an offering of connection, strength, and cultural truth.
