Babeen (Father)
~ Created in the loving memory of my late Father, George Thomas. A piece dedicated to the fathers who no matter where they are will be forever in our hearts.
This artwork is a tribute to my father, and to all fathers who carve their stories into the lives of their children.
In my studio one day, sunlight fell across a blank canvas just as thoughts of him arrived -quiet, steady, familiar. It felt like an invitation, a gentle reminder that his story still lives in me and deserved to be told.
My fatherās journey began oceans away. A young seaman, he travelled the world before choosing this country as his home. He worked hard, tried everything, adapted to every season of life. Along the way he met my mother, and two cultures wove themselves into one family story.
The bond we shared was deep, the kind that leaves an echo long after a father is gone. In this artwork I trace the pathways he walked: the hills of his youth, the miles he rode, the seas he crossed, the sacrifices he made. These marks become symbols of all fathers-men who do their best with what they have, who carry quiet stories of love, struggle, courage, and loss.
My father never got to say goodbye to his own mother, a reminder that every journey holds both strength and sorrow.
Through painting his life, I honour not only him but the fathers who shape us, guide us, and stay with us long after theyāve left.
Until we meet again in that place beyond;
Love you, Dad.
